ID-Cooling Silencer-ITX

ID-Cooling Computex case and the cooler we spotted in September are supposed to work together. The 300 x 250 x 120mm case will be available in China in November for 600 yuans (about $100). The CPU cooler will be sold separately for half this price.

We're not gonna lie, this looks awfully complicated. And properly working heat pipes when turned upside down remain to be seen.

Bay Trail-D mini-ITX trio

ECS BAT-I/J1750, BAT-I/J1850, and BAT-I/J2850 motherboards are based on Intel's Celeron J1750 (2 cores @ 2,41 GHz), Celeron J1850 (4 cores @ 2,00 GHz) and Pentium J2850 (4 cores @ 2,41 GHz) respectively.

The passively cooled boards feature one mini PCIe, one HDMI port, four USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, two 3GB/s SATA connections as well as electrostatic discharge protection and 100% solid capacitors.

Intel i7-4765T is amazing [+ our new PC]

Intel's lowest power desktop i7 features 4 cores and 8 threads of Haswell goodness. In terms of raw power the i7 4765T is basically the top-of-the-line Sandy Bridge i7 2600K with pumped-up graphics, all this with a fanless-friendly 35W TDP.

This is our new PC, and it's a thing of beauty. Under the 22cm wide NOFAN CR-100A temperature for the i7-4765T is 32°C at idle. At full load, it didn't exceed 47°C. We're obviously very happy with it, but we still believe fluxless soldering would have improved our results.

Overkill, on the verge of grotesque, and we love it! We went for the biggest cooler and the smallest motherboard for the shock factor. And for art, too. Definitely our most powerful PC ever. Coming from a Core 2 Duo, everything is just so snappy.

No case for us. Mainly because we like to live dangerously, but also because natural convection does wonder.

Overall a fantastic build, we just wish the i7-4765T and other 35W desktop CPUs were more readily available.

Intel NUC = Steam Box ?

Intel is positioning the NUC as a gaming machine. With the release of the D54250WYK kit featuring a Core i5-4250U and Intel HD Graphics 5000, the diminutive PC can certainly establish itself as a capable Steam Box. A small and silent one.

NUC chassis comparison test

Results for SilverStone PT14 are nothing short of disastrous. Temperatures are worst than the original actively cooled case. Akasa is doing fine and Impactics wins the race with the D1NU (and a big D1NU-EX coming from nowhere).

Update: Streacom NC1 added to the mix.

Revolutionary Titanics coating

Aluminium lovers rejoice. Impactics is launching an exciting dark grey protective layer that is not only easy on the eyes, but also offers an unprecedented defense against chemicals and corrosive substances (caustic soda test above). In other applications, Titanics coating can also increase heat dissipation up to 15%.

The icing on the cake is its lotus effect, making aluminium less prone to fingerprints than regular anodized surfaces.

Streacom NC1 lands in Europe

Streacom's passive NUC case is now available in Germany for 85 euros and in France for 90 euros.

A premium price for what looks like a carefully engineered product. Notice the acrylic side covers for increased WiFi and Bluetooth reception, the smart open-air conception, as well as the generous amount of cooling fins.

Update: £70 in the UK.

HDPLEX H1 [update : now available for pre-order]

HDPLEX's smallest case yet is designed for mini-ITX and Thin mini-ITX motherboards and up to 75W TDP processors. With 6 heat pipes and such a thick aluminium armor, we have no doubt it's going to be efficient.
