Compromises were made

When it comes to gaming, passive cooling is extremely hard to achieve. At least the i5-13600KF is being taken care of with the Noctua NH-P1 (and kept under 80°C). Special mention to the SilverStone ALTA G1M case which is both visually striking and well ventilated.

SilverStone HE02 DIY

This DIY project brings the SilverStone Heligon HE02 back. This high-performance, fanless CPU cooler was SilverStone's biggest CPU cooler ever. And it looks even more massive paired with this mini-STX motherboard. Featuring a striking double-cross design that maximizes surface area for heat dissipation, and widely spaced fins for convection, the HE02 launched in 2012 and was discontinued in 2020. Despite not being optimally oriented here, the HE02 handles the 65W Ryzen 5600G just fine.

Double NH-P1, double fun

Granted, it's a little rough around the edges but this DIY PC manages to use two Noctua NH-P1 as CPU and GPU cooler. Featuring the Ryzen 5 5600X, the Radeon RX 6600 graphics card, and the tiny SiverStone NJ450 fanless power supply, temperatures never exceed 85°C. We'll ignore the unconventional mounting system, and by unconventional we mean zip ties.

SilverStone ALTA G1M build

The MicroATX / mini-ITX SilverStone ALTA G1M is a very interesting (and compact) chassis, featuring a vertical design and mesh sides which are ideal for a chimney effect and passive CPU cooling. Paired with the Noctua NH-P1, the mighty i9-12900 is kept at 77°C under heavy load (Power Limit set to 100W). GPU-wise is another story as orientation and location of the graphics card prevent convection to freely occur.

SilverStone Sugo build

Check out this black monolith housing the 65W i5-12400, 4.5TB of storage, the Seasonic Prime Fanless PX-500 ATX power supply, and the Nofan CR-80EH CPU cooler. This build looks great but cooling is far from optimal, though. With Intel's PL1 and PL2 set to 50 watts and 100 watts respectively, the Alder Lake i5 still reaches a scorching 90°C.

Don't do this

For some reason, people keep insisting on using the worst PC cases with the Noctua NH-P1. This CPU cooler holds no magical properties and needs the right conditions to operate properly. The enormous heat sink doesn't even fit inside the SilverStone SUGO 16: "There were a couple hiccups though. The NH-P1 being so massive actually interfered with a rubber stand for the PSU on the floor of the case, so I just ripped it off and cleaned up the adhesive residue."

Acrylic DIY

Check out this cute little build featuring a simple acrylic panel, AMD's 65W Ryzen 5 3500X CPU, Palit's GeForce GTX 1050Ti KalmX graphics card, SilverStone's 450W SFW power supply, and Noctua's NH-P1 CPU cooler. Granted, convection could be better, and we have yet to see how the NH-P1 performs with a secondary heat source beneath it, but the concept is genius.

15-liter fanless workstation

The Spyrology Labs Jack of All Trades is a very niche, and very hard to find mini-ITX case. The 15-liter chassis is made of anodized aluminium and is convection-friendly thanks to large openings on all sides. Our friend Matt over at Fully Silent PCs just assembled this powerful and fanless rig featuring the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X paired with the Phanteks TC14PE CPU cooler, the NVIDIA Quadro P2200 paired with the Raijintek Morpheus II GPU cooler, and the SilverStone NJ450 SFX power supply. Thermals are just fine, even under load: 89°C max CPU, 81°C max GPU.

3D printing has so much potential. Whether for unique cases or actual CPU coolers, 3D printing is bound to get exponentially bigger in the coming years. 5800X / 5600 XT build

This Ryzen 7 5800X and Radeon RX 5600 XT build features the now discontinued SilverStone HE02 CPU cooler and ARCTIC's amazing Accelero S3 GPU cooler. Also aboard the pretty rare 550W ENERMAX Digifanless ATX power supply and the convection friendly Corsair Vengeance C70 case. While the end result is pretty great in its own right, exceeding the recommended max TDP of your CPU cooler (95W here) is never a good idea.

SilverStone's pico PSU

The reliability of fanless pico PSUs is spotty at best, and such a product from a trusted brand is a welcome game changer. The SilverStone AD120-DC is actually a combo kit featuring a 120W DC to DC power board and a 120W 12V AC-DC power adapter. The bundle also comes with multiple cables, including CPU, 24-Pin motherboard, SATA, and peripheral connectors. At only 160 x 25 x 45mm the board is a godsend for the small form factor PC crowd.

Meet Milo 10

SilverStone's new mini-ITX case is fully modular (from 2.8L to 3.7L) and is designed for passive cooling, thanks to its mesh panels (we're talking about Gemini Lake motherboards here). The VESA mountable chassis can house multiple storage drives and even a slim ODD. Unfortunately, the Milo 10 supports a max CPU cooler height of only 63mm, and the 69mm Alpine 12 Passive is not an option.
