EXCLUSIVE: AMD's "NUC" is coming soon

For the past seven years, the question has been "Will AMD launch its own NUC?". Technically speaking, 4"x4" AMD motherboards are already here with ASRock launching the Ryzen Embedded 4X4-R1000V, 4X4-R1000M, and 4X4-V1000M this month.

We can exclusively confirm that the project is well underway. Yes, an AMD "NUC" is coming soon. Since NUC is registered as an Intel trademark expect a brand new name. Please note that the final product will not be powered by Ryzen Embedded processors. Stay tuned.

JULY 2020 UPDATE: Ryzen-powered Asus PN50 announced.

EXCLUSIVE: Gemini Lake Refresh

Skyhawk Lake will have to wait. Six new Gemini Lake SoCs are coming later this year, including the desktop Pentium J5040, Celeron J4125 / J4025, and mobile Pentium N5030, Celeron N4120 / N4020.

The new processors are still based on the 14nm Goldmont Plus architecture and feature the same Intel UHD graphics and cache, but offer substantially higher frequencies in some cases.

The top-of-the-line Pentium J5040 is clocked at 2.0GHz up to 3.2GHz (1.5GHz up to 2.80 GHz for the J5005). Gemini Lake Refresh motherboards and mini PCs will be on shelves early 2020.

EXCLUSIVE: Intel Ghost Canyon NUC first look

Intel's Ghost Canyon X will be an absolute beast. The system will be powered by a 45W Coffee Lake HR processor, up to 8-core / 16-thread. Also onboard are three HDMI 2.0 ports, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, M.2 storage, and a PCIe x16 slot for a discrete graphics card.

The 5-liter chassis looks clean and elegant, but is subject to change. Ghost Canyon X is not expected until early 2020.

The system will almost certainly be actively cooled, although a third-party fanless case is always a possibility. Akasa Galactico did wonders with the 45W Skull Canyon NUC.

6.29.2018

EXCLUSIVE: ALL Coffee Lake NUCs will feature eDRAM

As we exclusively reported last year, Intel is ditching 15W processors in the NUC for more capable 28W chips, and positioning its diminutive barebone as a legit desktop replacement.

Featuring the i3-8109U (2C/4T up to 3.60 GHz, 4 MB cache), i5-8259U (4C/8T up to 3.80 GHz, 6 MB cache), and i7-8559U (4C/8T up to 4.50 GHz, 8 MB cache) the Coffee Lake NUC will also rock Intel's Iris Plus Graphics 655 and 128 MB eDRAM. Clearly, Radeon graphics aren't a sustainable option for Intel.

Note that the i3 and i5 iterations will be also available as motherboards only (NUC8i3BEB and NUC8i5BEB), ready for third party fanless cases.

9.03.2017

EXCLUSIVE: Four TURBOCHARGED NUC on the way

Just when we thought that Intel was gearing up for lower NUC TDP, Chipzilla is reinventing the NUC as a legit desktop replacement with powerful 28W chips. We're hearing that three "Coffee Lake U" models are in the works for Q2 2018.

✓ *th Generation C*re i3 Processor (CFL-U) 2c/4t 28W TDP
✓ *th Generation C*re i5 Processor (CFL-U) 4c/8t 28W TDP
✓ *th Generation C*re i7 Processor (CFL-U) 4c/8t 28W TDP

Additionally, the popular Skull Canyon gaming NUC is getting a sequel.

EXCLUSIVE: Akasa's Skull Canyon case (final)

The mothership has landed. After an initial concept, Akasa's fanless case for Intel's Skull Canyon NUC (NUC6i7KYK) went back to the drawing board.

Apparently the 45W i7 - including its Iris Pro Graphics 580 - requires extra cooling power, so Akasa is taking the design of its popular Plato to a whole new level.

Larger, and with a refined, aggressive look, this new chassis looks absolutely insane. We love it. Available in March.

7.15.2016

EXCLUSIVE: Kaby Lake / Apollo Lake NUC specs

Baby Canyon will feature a 28W i7 with IRIS graphics, and regular 15W i5 and i3 processors. Interestingly, DisplayPort and Thunderbolt 3 will be offered through a USB-C port. Intel is also ditching the full SD for a Micro SDXC slot. Great news, HDMI 2.0 is finally onboard.

The Kaby Lake NUC is now listed as an early 2017 product.

On the low end, the most affordable NUC will rock a 10W quad-core Apollo Lake Celeron that will definitely offer more horsepower than previous 6W Braswell chips. Note the 3.5mm rear speaker / TOSLINK combo. Arches Canyon will be available as a barebone, or with Window 10, 2GB RAM and 32 GB eMMC.

8.11.2015

EXCLUSIVE: Skylake-U lineup

The 15W U-series powers Ultrabook, MacBook Air, the entry-level iMac, and the NUC. Compared to Broadwell-U, Skylake-U looks streamlined and is easier to understand. Actually - aside vPro chips - there will be just one i7, one i5, one i3, one Pentium, and two Celerons available.

✓ Core i7-6600U (2.6-3.4 GHz / 2C4T / HD Graphics 520 / vPro / 15W TDP)

✓ Celeron 3955U (2.0 GHz / 2C2T / HD Graphics 510 / 15W TDP)
✓ Celeron 3855U (1.6 GHz / 2C2T / HD Graphics 510 / 15W TDP)

Also coming early 2016, 28W SKUs with Iris Graphics...

7.23.2015

EXCLUSIVE: The Skylake boost

Apparently, gone are the days of moderate improvement, Intel is gearing up for something big with Skylake. Graphics promise to be spectacular, especially in the low-power department (a 41% increase for the Y-Series, 34% for the U-Series). In raw CPU performance terms, a healthy 10% increase - bare minimum - is expected across the board.

5.30.2015
