Primestation Pulsar review

"The Primestation Pulsar is a compact desktop PC that is based on inhouse case design and development. The goal was to create a completely passively cooled PC for the specific demands of the business segment. This means that the case is the central element of the Primestation Pulsar. It is made completely from metal and offers massive cooling ribs on both sides. The stability of the case is very good and it resists deforming attempts under regular usage including transport. If the cooling fins had been thinner to increase the cooling surface, the stability might have become a problem. At slightly more than 4 kilograms (~8.8 lb), the compact computer brings a hefty weight to the scale, which isn't really apparent at first glance. The external power supply adds almost another 500 grams (~1.1 lb). The workmanship of the Primestation Pulsar is of the highest quality, and the haptics of the device also leave a very high-quality impression."

The PrimeMini 5 features i3, vPro i5, or vPro i7 Intel processors and accommodates two SSDs and dual-channel RAM. Connections such as HDMI and USB have been updated to the latest standards and for the very first time, PrimeMini features USB-C and Thunderbolt ports. "On first glance, this may look like just another compact business PC, but as the price above indicates, the PrimeMini 5 is trying to do something different. There are a few things that mark this PC out from the likes of the Asus Mini PC PN50, most notably a fanless design and an extreme focus on energy efficiency.

The price may seem steep, but there are TCO advantages of switching from a gas-guzzling desktop PC. With over-powered innards and multiple fans, it isn’t unusual for a PC to consume 80W at idle; the PrimeMini sips 13W in general use and even at its peak draws only 30W. Over the course of five years, that’s a saving of roughly £150 based on typical usage and electricity rates. If you need a computer to stay on all the time – and this is a PC designed with 24/7 usage in mind – then that saving triples to £450. It’s fair to say that this is a relatively specialized piece of equipment. 

The high price may put you off using it for office-based deployments, but look at it over a multi-year period and the lowered energy costs start to become a little more attractive. Where this machine is really likely to find a home, however, is as a micro-server, quietly sitting in a cupboard and running a handful of constant applications with minimal fuss while cutting down electricity and CO2 consumption. If you divide the cost by a likely life of five years, that may not be too high a price to pay."

PrimeMini 5 review

"The PrimeMini 5 sports a premium design and this can be felt right from the time of unboxing to using the actual product itself. Having a length of nearly seven inches and weighing about 1.3 kg, the PrimeMini 5 is not the sleekest mini PC on the market. Having said that, the device still has a small footprint with a minimalist design and will easily fit in most workspaces.

With configuration choices up to the Core i7-8665U vPro, up to 32 GB of RAM, and a combination of NVMe and SATA storage, the PrimeMini 5 has a lot to offer for businesses that require a robust computing solution that can be deployed with minimum fuss. The all-aluminum construction lends a premium look to the device while also offering IP51 protection to keep dust out. Connectivity options are good, and buyers will be glad to know that Prime Computer also allows adding a few additional ports in addition to what the Intel NUC8 Provo Canyon Pro board already offers."
